How Bounce House Rental Services First Came About
Who came up with the idea of bounce house rental services?
Bouncy houses or inflatables were first brought out in 1959 by John Scurlock, he was a mechanical engineer from Louisiana, one day when he observed some of his employees jumping on the inflatable covers used for tennis courts, he came up with the idea. He thought up the inflatable tents, domes, however, his biggest achievement was designing the safety air cushion that is still used today for catching people that jump from buildings or great heights.
When he watched his employees having so much fun, he was struck by the idea of an inflatable floor that was purely for fun. His idea soon came to fruition and he opened a company in New Orleans which was named Space Walks. They developed inflatable mattresses, called Space Pillows, and soon evolved into bounce house structures.
However, in the meantime, some students in England used this idea to raise funds. The word moonwalk was thought up to describe these inflatable structures, due to the fact it made people feel like they were walking on the moon. In the 1960s, the bounce houses were bigger and higher. In 1968, Scurlock’s wife Frances opened up the first bounce house rental company and 8 years later built a custom facility that produced and hired out the products.
They went on to promote the spacewalk for children’s events like birthday parties, picnics, and fairs. However, the problem with these inflatables
has they had no enclosure, which did pose a safety threat. In 1967, an inflatable top and two fans were added, however, things heated up faster in the summer. As walls and circulating air were added.
